British Extends Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Warning Roster with 11 Destinations

Industrial alcohol alert sign

The UK government has added an additional eleven more countries to its travel alert register concerning the risks of industrial alcohol contamination from tainted spirits.

The expanded travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a worldwide rise in the incidence of reported cases" of industrial alcohol contamination.

Just a few weeks ago, officials had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, after multiple serious events including the tragic loss of six tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that as little as small amounts of toxic alcohol can result in vision loss or death within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Used?

Toxic alcohol is a toxic industrial alcohol often used in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint thinner. This substance is not intended for drinking.

While it is generated during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the distillation process.

Yet in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to cut costs, and because it is tasteless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to notice.

Official Guidance for Tourists

Government representative a senior official stated that each tourist should know the symptoms of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"While having drinks overseas, opt for trusted places and steer clear of homemade alcohol or free shots," the official warned.

"If something seems unusual, such as a headache that's much more severe than typical or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention right away."

The full roster of countries noted as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol toxicity currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
