Diving into an Bizarre Steam Demo: Controlling a Turdy Character on a Quest to Find the Toilet

Steam Next Fest is currently underway, and enthusiasts have discovered plenty of entertaining indie games. Yet, one stands out for its offbeat concept. Named Unko Technica, this retro-inspired jumping adventure lets you play a protagonist that is truly a piece of poop trying to navigate to a commode. In case you're wondering, "Unko" is Japanese for "poop."

The gameplay is easy to grasp: press a one button to leap. In 150 stages, encounter tough enemies and access a store to acquire outfits for your fecal avatar.

Time your actions with caution, since one error forces starting over. Leap on floating orbs to propel the poop higher, traverse crumbling ledges, and interact with triggers to reveal secret routes. Collect coins to purchase tougher levels as gameplay intensifies.

In terms of design, the game shows off vibrant environments and catchy background music. The simple graphics featuring moving abstract forms evokes memories of fans of old favorites like Earthbound.

Although tough to think of other games where you play as a coiled turd, gaming often included toilet humor. As an illustration, in Death Stranding, players make explosives from protagonist droppings. Games like Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved use manure as soil enrichment. And of course, this theme appears extensively in the South Park RPG The Stick of Truth.

Putting aside its humorous concept, Unko Technica has already garnered notable recognition, such as winning at a major publisher's game competition in 2023. The demo is available currently on Steam, with the full game set to arrive on PC in the fall.
