My Hero Academia Cast Members Reflect on an Emotional Final Season: 'I’m Something of a Weepy Mess'

The beloved anime series My Hero Academia has reached its conclusion, leaving fans with a profound sense of emotion that goes deeper than the story itself. This heroic tale has always been more than a simple story; it's a rite-of-passage story about optimism, resilience, and the true meaning of heroism in a challenging world. The eighth season drives these core themes to their breaking point, as the students of U.A. High faces the aftermath of the Paranormal Liberation Front and a world on the edge of collapse.

For a whole audience, the series, which began in 2015, served as their gateway to anime. From its hype-filled start to its emotional ending, it shaped the art form for nearly a decade. Its end truly signifies the end of a chapter. If you find yourself shedding a tear during the final episodes, know that you are in good company. The English dub cast experienced those exact emotions, pouring immense heart into their performances for the last chapters.

Bidding Goodbye to a Pivotal Role

"It was such a magical thing to see this final season bring together all these story threads into this massive, emotional catharsis for these characters," shared one actor. "And to be part of that, in that moment, voicing the characters, is incredibly powerful."

The challenge of the farewell isn't just about the plot. My Hero Academia became a defining chapter in the careers of its performers, and with its conclusion comes the closing of an period they have carried with them for years.

"Just as a person, for whom this has been part of life for the better part of a decade, even if the line I'm saying isn’t particularly emotional, if it’s just Ida being typical, every time I finish a session, I’m kind of a weepy mess because it's ending. I’m not ready," confessed another veteran voice actor.

Favorite Moments from the Last Season

Despite portraying their own iconic roles, several actors still have personal favorite characters beyond their roles, heroes whose story arcs hit them just as hard on an emotional level.

"The thing that’s taken me aback so far in my viewing of the final season is how numerous characters are bringing me to tears," noted one actor. "Whether that be the Symbol of Peace's battle at the very beginning of this season, the Erasure Hero, [even] Aoyama drew a tear this season!"

The performers behind the brotherly hero-and-villain duo were also swept up in the heartbreak of their complicated dynamic, particularly during the brothers’ confrontations across the recent seasons.

A Powerful Moment

"Recently, a castmate delivered a line as his character that, honestly, if you took it out of context, it’s a simple line, it shouldn't affect anyone, but he poses a question to his sibling a inquiry, and the way it was delivered was so real and poignant," remembered one actor. "It influenced the performance I gave. I adore my castmates, they’re so good at this, and I can’t express enough that I’m so fortunate."

Another actor echoed the sentiment, explaining that the apparently minor question traces back to a brief, funny scene shown earlier, one that comes full circle in the finale and lands with devastating emotional weight.

"Fast-forward to the final season, when they’re meeting, and [the character] says, 'Wait, I need more time'," the actor said. "Yes, it was just a way to try to connect. It was just a question, but within the story, it's all-encompassing. It's love, understanding, sorrow..."

"... and regret," added the other, clearly moved. "Those brothers ought to have had the chance to speak like that."
