The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Iconic Tropical Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Acquired by US Private Equity Firm.
A major resort island located on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American investment group in a deal reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to build on the vision and dedication of the family owners has established in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
Details of the Sale
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to customary regulatory approvals.
The family issued a comment saying they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the area is built upon, featuring a substantial array of amenities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a broad network of regional partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The late Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that housed domestic holidaymakers from the outback and southern states.

The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
